Scottsdale Academy Students Take Their Skills to Phoenix Fashion Week

For any member of the beauty community whether they’re a hair designer, stylist, makeup artist or a nail expert, the opportunity to work a fashion week is one of the highest honors. Last month, students at the Scottsdale TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy got the chance to experience what it’s like to use their skills outside the salon and see their visions come to life on a larger stage when they partnered with Phoenix Fashion Week.

Currently the leading fashion industry event in the Southwest, Phoenix Fashion Week took place October 13-15 at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale. As the official cosmetology school for the event, TONI&GUY students and staff were responsible for creating all of the hairstyles to accompany each look on the runway.

Phoenix Fashion Week has been continuing to grow year after year and has become highly acclaimed fashion week. The PHXFW runway showcases works from local designers as well as established brands from around the world bringing in designs from a wide range of different countries.

A team of academy student stylists and staff worked backstage each of the three nights of Phoenix Fashion Week to ensure that each model’s hair was perfect before they took the runway. With 80 to 100 models each night, the Scottsdale team had their hands full.

“It’s great for them, they get a ton of extra hours, they get to build their portfolios they get to build their networks,” said Academy Director, Dynelle Rodriguez.

On top of taking charge of the model’s hair during the fashion shows, students from our Scottsdale academy also hosted a lounge-style braid bar at the Style Villa, Phoenix Fashion Week’s exclusive shopping experience featured during the event. The braid bar offered on trend braids and updo hairstyles done by TONI&GUY students and instructors as well as flash tattoos and a pop-up shop with a variety of branded T&G merchandise. The area of the braid bar was set up to look like a lounge with furniture and rugs to create a comfortable atmosphere for fashion week attendees to relax while they have their hair done.

It was also a great way to promote TONI&GUY and the education program offered at our academies. The team used this opportunity to seek out potential students or those interested in pursuing a career in hairdressing.

“We’ve had a lot of students start [at our] school from Phoenix Fashion Week,” said Rodriguez.

In fact, Scottsdale’s newest instructor was discovered by the staff through Phoenix Fashion Week.

This experience was not only an invaluable experience for the students and a great way to immerse them into a different facet of the industry, but it was also a way to get the TONI&GUY name out there. The event provided major publicity for the academy and the work they did for PHXFW through commercials, social media, TV campaigns, news segments and a mention in the program.

The academy was able to partake in all the action of Phoenix Fashion Week in large part due to Rodriguez’s connection to the organization that makes it happen. She has worked for PHXFW for 8 years as a style director, coordinating hair and makeup looks between hairdressers and designers, managing runway presentation, coaching models and calling the show.

This is the fourth year that the Scottsdale academy has partnered with PHXFW. Besides the main event of Phoenix Fashion Week, the Scottsdale academy also partners with the organization for smaller events throughout the year including Shop Garment District, Polo Party and Model Launch Party as well as casting their models for student photoshoots.
